There’s a lot of zombie movie news coming out of Hollywood this week so I’ve compiled these all into a small, bite size portions for your reading enjoyment…

Principal cast for a new zombie film, named Gatekeeper , was announced last week. The project has a few big names attached to, such as Judge Reinhold and Ron Perlman – wait, are those really big names? In the famously low budget genre of most zombie movies, I’d say that they count.

The filmmakers behind the I Spit on Your Rave are looking for participants in yet another “world’s largest zombie gathering” record. The gathering will be used in a scene for the movie, which is a mockumentary about the world’s largest post-zombie-apocalypse music festival (try saying that 5 times fast).

A release date has been set for Resident Evil: Afterlife of September 17th, 2010.

The World War Z movie adaption is apparently still happening with the recent addition of screenwriter Matthew Michael Carnahan to the project. It’s unclear whether he is just tweaking the script or doing a whole re-write, although author Max Brooks is optimistic, saying “He’s one of Hollywood’s hot A-list writers, so if they went after him and paid him a mountain of gold, it definitely shows their confidence in this project.” I concur, Mr. Brooks.

Ever wonder what would happen if the living dead invaded a 1970s blaxploitation film? That thought never crossed my mind, and unfortunately now I know.

Insane in the Brain starts with several zombies rising from graves. One of them stumbles into a brothel and engages a lady of the night, killing her in the act (sadly this is not the only movie I’ve seen featuring a zombie fellatio.) Several other prostitutes are found dead in mysterious ways, and two jive-talking cops are called in to solve the murders. They deduce that sex acts somehow must be attracting the zombies, and come up with a plan to cover bullets with condoms in order to take them down. Yes, it’s as dumb as it sounds. A posse is formed with a few cops and some prostitutes, and the group patrols the cemetery in search of zombies. They find some, shoot them, end of movie.

Gah, where to even begin with this waste of time? I should mention this was intended as more of comedy than a horror film, so I won’t knock it down for not being scary. But it’s not very funny either. One or two exchanges between the cops were kinda funny, but outside of that it was mind-numbingly dull. All the shots were far too long and the action was so interesting I wanted to shut it off.

Everything else aside, Insane in the Brain explored new lows in FX makeup. The zombies were literally made of leftover halloween masks and afro wigs and they they constantly groaned, “Brains… more brains!” despite not a single zombie in the film actually eating a brain. I really don’t want to even think about this film any longer so I’m gonna end this review here. Just don’t waste your time or money on it.

Children of the Living Dead is the story of Abbott Hayes, a convicted serial murderer and rapist that was killed in prison and arose from the dead to kidnap children and lead a legion of zombies against people that want to build an auto-mall  in place of the cemetery across from his old home.  Years after being kidnapped, the children are killed by zombie Abbott Hayes while on their way to a concert, only to rise from the dead as part of his legion of zombies. The construction crew keep finding mysterious things that are happening to the bodies at the cemetery; bodies missing, evidence of live burial. Is this the work of the fabled Abbott Hayes or just vandals and miscreants?

 

Any way you slice it, this movie is a travesty of cinema. The Night of the Living Dead 30^th Anniversary Edition is supposed to be a prequel to this movie, with the Cemetery Zombie (Bill Hinzman) being Abbott Hayes.  

 

Tom Savini starts out the film as a zombie hunter creatively dispatching zombies with a fine array of fire arms and other improvised techniques. This is all made incredibly goofy by the over-dubbing of simple dialog that could have easily been inner monologue. Since Tom’s mouth isn’t moving, it comes across like the mumblings of Popeye. In fact, the first half of the movie has an exceeding amount of over-dubbed dialog that sometimes obviously doesn’t fit with what’s being shown on screen. There are times when the teenagers look like they are talking and even motioning with their hands, yet the dialog had already stopped long before. Most of this over-dubbed dialog happens while the characters faces are not necessarily shown on screen and comes off as dialog that the ”Mystery Science Theater 3000” cast would be interjecting or something from Kung Pow: Enter the Fist. These are all obvious attempt to “fix” the film in post production, but given that these are all tactics used by comedic groups to deride certain works, it comes off as making a jokes of itself.

 

There are certain things about the movie that just don’t add up. When the teenagers die, there is a funeral for them. You see their 5 caskets lined up and people standing around them mourning. There is a service, after which everyone departs while the caskets stay lined up and above the ground. I haven’t been to too many funerals, but every one of them, and every one I’ve seen on screen, ends which the casket being lowered into the ground, not just left out to rot. Why would they leave them out like this? Because it makes it easier for the grave robbers to come take their jewelry like it says in the script.

 

There’s a scene in a diner where Matthew, the son of the man building the auto-mall, goes to see Laurie, the young waitress that has tickled his fancy. He sits down and orders a cup of coffee from her as they chat. Before he even sips the coffee she gives him, she takes the cup away and replaces it with a fresh one and pours another cup. Before he even sips that one, she refills it. Before he even sips the second one, she refills it again. He ends up leaving having never even tasted one of the four cups of coffee that she served.

 

During the big zombie fight scene at the end, which looks more like a bar brawl scene that should have taken place in the movie Roadhouse, Laurie hides in the store room of the diner while Matthew goes to fight the zombie hordes. She’s left with a handgun and a flashlight. When the power goes out, she fumbles to make the flashlight work. When it does, Abbott Hayes is there, growling in her faces. She screams and cowers on the floor. Suddenly he’s gone and she ventures out of the store room to be attacked by other zombies and subsequently saved by the Sheriff who is able to gun down 6 zombies with 2 shots from the hip. What was that all about?

 

I really could go on all day about this movie. The fact that it was created with the help of many of the people who made the original Night of the Living Dead is definitely saddening. Tor Ramsey, director of Children of the Living Dead, issued this letter of apology for his involvement with the film along with an account of what he believes went wrong with it. When we saw John Russo at the Flashback Weekend horror convention in Chicago, Nate asked him about Children of the Living Dead in a polite side conversation and he refused to talk about it. I believe that these to things speak mountains about the quality of this film.

 

Despite all of this, I recommend that everyone with a love for the zombie genre check out this movie, preferably on the cheap, just to see how low it can go. My ceaseless bitching about this movie could never do justice to describing just how bad it is. You really ought  to see for yourself.

Bride Of Re-Animator follows the story of Dr. Herbert West and Dr. Dan Cain, 8 years after the incidents that take place in Re-Animator. Dr. West and Dr. Cain finish a tour as field surgeons during a bloody civil war in Peru where they have continued there research trying to “conquer death”. They soon return home to Miskatonic University Hospital and take up residency in an old cemetery’s mortuary, where they’ve created a lab to continue their experiments. The remains of the Miskatonic Massacre are stored in the pathology department and studied by Dr. Wilbur Graves. Dr. Graves is soon visited by Lt. Chapel of the Arkham P.D. regarding the night of the massacre, although the case is closed, Lt. Chapel has a personal stake in the investigation as his deceased wife was re-animated and left to fester in the psychiatric ward of the hospital. Lt. Chapel is asking questions about missing parts from the pathology department like the head of Dr. Hill that Chapel presents to graves, which turned up at a circus sideshow. Dr. Graves soon begins to experiment with the re-agent and re-animates Dr. Hill’s head again. Dr. Hill is still bent on his revenge on Dr. West and soon begins exerting his control over the re-animated dead to help in ths endeavor. Meanwhile, West has been the one taking the body parts from Miskatonic for his experiments, making gruesome mismatched-part creatures to further his research. Soon Dr. West pulls on Dr. Cain’s heart strings and plays him like a fiddle by offering to recreate his dead girlfriend, Meg, by making his master creation – a new life made of different parts starting with Meg’s heart. But, Lt. Chapel is hot on their heals and soon Dr. Hill will exact his revenge.

Bride Of Re-Animator doesn’t quite live up to the level excellence that was the original, but it doesn’t fall extremely far behind. Worse sequels have definitely been made. The pacing of the movie is kind of slow, but watchable. Jeffrey Combs gives another great performance as Dr. Herbert West, delivering his usual brand of dark humor in his matter-of-fact manner. His acting and his character are the reason for watching these movies.

The zombie make-up and special effects were pretty good. The special effects department didn’t really use any astounding tricks to leave you scratching your head, but it worked just the same and mostly came off pretty campy and humorous, which is par for this course. Lots of blood and gore. I think every time you see Dr. Cain over a patient he gets sprayed with blood. It seemed as thought the special effects team my have been having their fun with it as he seemed to be acting through his discomfort and actual surprise. It was nice to see the stop-motion animated critters after so many years of CGI.

The producers of this film were trying to throw in little Bride Of Frankenstein references. The laboratory was full of superfluous gadgetry and had fog seeping out of everything, which is one thing. But, at one point Dr. Cain is wearing this blousy pirate shirt for no reason, evidently trying to bring to mind the era that Mary Shelley was writing in.

One thing that really bugged me for no reason was with Lt. Chapel character. Every time he introduces himself as a cop, he does it by fumbling over flipping his badge out. And it’s not over the top slapstick fumbling. This is something that’s usually done with relative smoothness and grace, the cop flips the badge, it gone, on to other subjects. But here it’s just this action that you know he’s going to do, you see it coming, then there’s the delivery and it just kind of flops to the side exposing the badge all awkward like. It’s really weird and I had to say something about it to see if anybody else caught it. Maybe I’m way off.

You could really take it or leave it with this movie. It has some pretty cool gags and Dr. West is always good, but it moves pretty slow and my mind began wandering. It’s definitely watchable and pretty fun, but you wouldn’t be missing anything if you skipped it. I think it would go over well with a few friends and a few beers.

The zombie apocalypse has begun. How do you ensure that you survive? (assuming surviving in a world infested by the undead is something you want to do…) There’s no easy way to survive, but lots of ways to die. Here are our top 10 ways to die in a zombie attack…

10. Friendly fire. With all those bullets whizzing around, it’s easy for one to miss. Well-meaning zombie hunters may mistake you for the undead. It may also be pleasantly convenient for someone with a desire to take you out to have an “accident”. Don’t take any chances – scrounge whatever body armor you can.

9. Injuries.  Twisting an ankle or breaking a leg makes it difficult to run away from zombies.  With hospitals being out of commission, even the most benign medical problems could become deadly liabilities.  Be smart – keep yourself in shape and learn some first aid.

8. Accidents. Using a lawnmower as a zombie-slaying device may seem like a good idea at the time, but one mistake could be the end for you.  If misused, any number of everyday items are dangerous enough to kill you.

7. Running out of supplies.  While running out of gas may be embarrassing, in a zombie attack it could be dangerous.  Running out of bullets in the middle of a firefight even more so.  Run out of food and you’re screwed.  Stock up when you can!

6. Blocking yourself in. Sure, boarding up the doors and windows keep the zombies out, but they also keep you in. What happens when they inevitably breach your defenses? Always have an escape route planned out in advance.

5. Being alone. There’s safety in numbers. Going off alone in an unsecured area is just asking for trouble. Remember: you are just a tasty sack of meat to hungry zombies. If you get into trouble there will be no one to back you up. Be safe and use the buddy system.

4. Being a hero. That one moment of bravely charging into battle may get you into the history books, but most likely you won’t be around to enjoy it. Unless your name happens to be Bruce Willis, take our advice and let someone else be the hero.

3. Zombified loved ones. Don’t forget for a moment that your loved one is no longer anything other than an undead creature with an insatiable hunger for flesh. They are zombies and there is no hope for them. Don’t try to help them. They will eat you soon as they get a chance.

2. Get bit. If a zombie bites you, you’re as good as dead. Soon you’ll die and turn into a zombie, unless your friends find out you’ve been bitten and kill you first. Pray that they do.

1. Other humans. Let’s face it, if you’ve managed to survive the initial zombie threat, your main threat isn’t the undead, it’s the people you’re with. As competition for power and resources gets intense, people will do whatever it takes to get what they need. Add in the threat of roving biker gangs and rogue armed forces and you’ve got plenty of reasons to watch your back.
