Here’s something I’ve never done before on this site – revealed my favorite zombie movies. These are the zombie films I keep coming back to over and over again.

1. Night of the Living Dead (1968): The original zombie movie still has the ability to scare the crap out of me. I’ll never forget the first time I saw this while I was home alone late at night.
2. Dawn of the Dead (2004): I’m sure some of our readers will call me a heretic with this one, but I can’t deny the fact that I friggin’ love this movie. It’s frenetic pace and over the top action just make me smile.
3. Dawn of the Dead (1978)
4. Zombi 2: Fulchi’s masterpiece never gets old, and I delight in showing this to people who’ve never heard of it. They all become fans after seeing it.
5. Re-Animator: To me, this is one of the funniest movies of all time.
6. Shaun of the Dead
7. 28 Weeks Later: The Helicopter scene – ’nuff said.
8. Hard Rock Zombies
9. Plan 9 from Outer Space
10. American Zombie

This week’s list is the Top Ten Places You Don’t Want To Be During the Zombpocalypse. Each place will also be supplemented with a zombie movie featuring a scene in that location.

1. Planes:You know that SkyMall catalog they put in the seat pockets on planes? They make money by taking advantage of an idle audience who are stuck a mile in the air. Much like a group of hungry zombies would treat the average commuter flight like a buffet lunch.

2. Hospitals: Access to medical supplies and food in a large sturdy building seems like an idealistic safe haven. But hospitals are also the last stop for many people who are about to die. Will they come back from the dead?

3. Government Shelters: The government doesn’t have a terribly good track record when it comes to providing shelter for victims during natural disasters. One only needs to look back at Hurricane Katrina to find out how inept our government can be in a crisis. If you can’t trust them in a hurricane, can you trust them in a life and death situation?

4. Underwater: Imagine being on vacation in the Caribbean, going scuba diving, and viewing a shark in it’s natural habitat… followed by a zombie. If that doesn’t make you pee in your wet suit I don’t know what will.

5. Your Favorite Bar: Everybody has their favorite hang-out, but you can’t necessarily sustain yourself on booze and peanuts for very long.

6. Zombie Convention: In other words, “Dinner is served.”

7. Train Station: Any place where people are trying franticly to escape, there are bound to be mistakes made, mob mentality, emotional contagion and a crowded place where infection can spread like wild-fire.

8. Church: All to often, people go to church in a time of crisis. If we learned anything from the original Dawn of the Dead, we learned that zombies go where they know. With the statistics showing that 96% of the world is religious, you have that much more of a chance that any church, synagogue, or mosque will just turn into a death trap.

9. Cemetery: This might seem like a no-brainer, but it definitely will be if you stumble upon an open casket or mortuary while the recently dead are returning.

10. Military Complex: While this may seem like a good idea, countless movies have shown otherwise, being that the zombie infection may even start because of the military or they may just be bone-headed enough to think they’re invincible.

Although a sequel to 28 Weeks Later was hinted at in the last scenes of the movie, news about the actual production of the film has been scarce. Now, producer Danny Boyle’s schedule is reportedly clear and he is actively in discussion with studio execs about the film. In a recent interview with MTV he revealed some details:

“There’s a bit of discussion going on about it at the moment… I have an idea for it [but] I’ve got to present it and see what people think really because it might be silly really.”

Sillier than a helicopter mowing down a ravenous zombie mob? If so count me in.

Where do we draw the line on what is and what is not a zombie movie? We just can’t decide on our own, so every Monday we’ll post a new movie to be debated by, you, our readers and ask the question: Zombie Movie Or Not? Every Sunday we’ll post our findings and possibly strike that movie off our Zombie Movie List. The week should give you enough time to rent the movie if need be or you desire.

What every reader must keep in mind is that there are two basic types of zombie that every zombie movie based off of – the Voodoo Zombie and the Romero Zombie. The Voodoo Zombie, while not always raised by Voodoo necessarily, is basically a person, either undead or entranced, that is controlled by a person or entity for the purpose of completing tasks, often killing. Romero Zombies are basically mindless, flesh-eating undead whose bite will turn victims into zombies. Now, not all movies adhere to all of these rules, but if the basics are there, you got a zombie movie.

This weeks debate is over Danny Boyle’s 2002 hit 28 Weeks Later starring Cillian Murphy and Brendan Gleeson.

IS: While the zombies in 28 Days Later are not actually dead, they are considered dead by the uninfected as there is nothing to bring them back. The only difference between Romero Zombies and zombie in 28 Days Later is the running and that only serves to heighten the terror.

IS NOT: The “infected” are not zombies, they’re not dead, therefore not zombies. They run because they’re not undead, they’re just infected with Rage. 28 Days Later is about a disease outbreak, not zombies.

Here’s the trailer, from Twitch, for the upcoming film Descendents (aka Solos/Alone), by writer/ director Jorge Olguin. It’s scheduled for release in 2008. Following the trailer is a description of the film, from it’s website.

Descendents is an apocalyptic thriller that tells the adventure of a little girl who must survive in a dying world where dangerous military men and people are converted into strange creatures. Shot in just 9 days in different locations in Chile, South America. The film has a stylish and elegant visual treatment, combined with last generation digital effects, impressive make-up effects and most actors are from 5 to 10 years old.

The trailer for this looks pretty good, and I dig the score used in the trailer; the second song reminds me a little of the scores by John Murphy for the 28 Days/ Weeks Later films. Also, check out some still photos from the film, over at Fangoria. We’ll let you know when a release date is set.

It’s hard to even start talking about 28 Weeks Later without first discussing it’s predecessor 28 Days Later. 28 Days Later really set the bar high for a new generation of zombie movies. An infection that turns people into (essentially) crazed zombies virtually wipes out most of Great Britain. Now, 28 Weeks Later, the US armed forces moved in and reconstruction has begun. Two siblings who were fortunate enough to be out of the country during the infection are returned to their homeland. Without giving too much away, all hell breaks loose and the infection comes back. With no way to contain it, the army is forced to destroy everyone and everything, and it becomes a race for survival.

Almost right off the bat 28 Weeks Later takes the intensity of the first film and turns the volume up. WAY UP. Holy crap this easily one of the scariest, most disturbing movies I’ve ever seen. The characters face impossible odds and fall into the most disturbing situations. What I love about this series is how it manages to accurately portray the full range of human emotions under dire circumstances. And let me tell you there are some circumstances that are beyond dire.

At no point does 28 Weeks Later compromise. The scenes are gory without ever being campy. It actually made me cover my eyes in parts for the first time in years! (I thought I’d been desensitized to this kind of thing!) Tension, fear, and desperation run throughout.

Although it has a different director than the first movie, it still manages to retain the same destitute feeling. It also seems to have taken a healthy dose of inspiration from Children of Men. I’m not saying that it lives up to 28 Days Later – it surpasses it.
