TV Monday for the Week of October 15th

31 Days of Halloween

Finally some real Halloween television are starting to appear! This week The Search for the Next Elvira continues which I am enjoying. You can also watch both the original and remake of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre this week, and the classic carnival sideshow movie Freaks will be on TCM on Friday night. Also ABC Family starts their 13 Nights of Halloween programming this week for spooky (but not too scary) Halloween fun. Finally, not listed below because it only pertains to DirecTV subscribers (like me) but they must be doing some sort of Troma Film Fest as they are showing The Toxic Avenger parts one and two along with Class of Nuke ‘Em High on their “101″ channel

“Alive” Viral Marketing Campaign

Alive is a new zombie-themed television series. No wait, it’s not. In fact, Alive doesn’t even have a pilot yet. But it already has a viral marketing campaign. The producers, instead of spending money on making a pilot decided to make a series of short web-teasers in order to build a “buzz” around it and entice studios to put some money into making a pilot.

Personally I think it sounds like a lazy person’s way to get a pilot made. Sure I’d love to produce a TV series, but I think that putting a couple of videos on youtube and starting a few websites and hoping it “builds buzz” is the wrong way to do it.

But then again, just by talking about it am I contributing to the buzz?

Here’s one of the videos and couple websites related to Alive:

31 Days of Halloween

In general it’s a rather lackluster week for someone looking to get in Halloween spirit, with the exception of The Search for the Next Elvira on Saturday which looks to be amusing at the very least. I PROMISE YOU next week the real fun will start with 13 days of Halloween on ABC Family and Monsterfest on AMC!

TV Monday for the Week of October 1, 2007

31 Days of Halloween

It’s the first week of October and already lots of great horror television. If you don’t have the Chillers channel yet, you’re really missing out. Chillers is a new cable station just formed earlier this year. Bug your cable company if you don’t have it.Best bets for this week:

Turner Classic Movies and American Movie classics always show a lot of fantastic classic horror movies every year. This week we have Dr. Jekyl and Mr. Hyde, I Walked With a Zombie, and Creature from the Black Lagoon. The SciFi channel is running a Leprechaun marathon starting at 11:00 PM Saturday night, but is mysteriously missing Leprechaun 3 and Leprechaun 5: In The Hood. Saturday night also has the original 1978 Halloween, so don’t miss out on that either.

Masters of Snore-R

homecoming05.jpg

Season One of Masters of Horror has recently been released as a boxset from Anchor Bay, containing all 13 original episodes of the series on 14 discs. It includes the Joe Dante’s zombie episode Homecoming. The basis of this story was a great idea, original and heavy on social-politics, but it succumb to horrible execution, a crappy script and bad acting. I’m very middle of the road with Dante (I really dug Explorers, The Howling and even the crapfest that is Pirahna), but find myself disliking most of his work. Yes, I dislike Gremlins. Overall, this series has been a complete letdown, with only a few shining moments. John Carpenter’s Cigarette Burns was great, Dante’s Homecoming, not so great. These episodes remind me of a bad rehash of the 90’s Outer Limits, with little to no horror or gore or anything truly scary. Here’s my million dollar question: How can 13 “Masters of Horror” not make one decent zombie film?

SLC Zombie!

SLC ZOMBIE!

Last Sunday, downtown Salt Lake City was the set for a television pilot called “The Rising”. The location was perfect since “State Street is pretty empty.”

Having just been in SLC last month I can certainly attest to that fact. That place is DEAD on Sundays - not even the resturants and drug stores are open.
