Count Smokula presents: Zombie

Count Smokula

Being a ZRC reporter means a life full of fame, fortune, and adventure (or not). But the adventure of researching foreign zombie films and battling server outages is nothing compared to the adventure our friend Count Smokula emailed us about. He writes:

Dear Mr. Erik Zempel,

I so enjoyed finding your vundaful veb site the Zombie Reporting Center.

It is because of my intimate knowledge of zombies in Haiti that I vas enabled to write several popular songs about our undead zomboid friends.

Vhen The Great Psychic, Mama July. took me from the sunny shores of Santo Domingo to the rugged psychic terrain of Port-au-Prince and beyond, I vas poysanally introduced to zombies as the undead of a Haitian Vitch Doctor. Because of my constant use of the ancient camera (pre-digital age, you understand!), the zombies threatened to do me in if I didn’t fork over a
thousand U.S. dollars immediately. Seeing that my pockets vere kvite empty, I didn’t see that as much of a possibility, so I began to fidget a bit noivously, putting on and removing my Ray-Ban sunglasses vit a greater rapidity than normal. As they vatched me play vit my Ray-Bans, they began to laugh hysterically, and then I knew I had these zombies in the palm of my hand. They vere not all that hard to please, only most people didn’t know about this Ray-Ban
trick.

As ve left the compound unscathed, yet vit pounding hearts from a bit of trepidation, the zombies continued to laugh vildly as they cracked the bullvhips in honor of our departure.

And so I wrote this epic masterpiece “Zombie” vit the great American blues-singer Mr. Screamin’ Jay Hawkins in mind, Vhen I played it for Mr. Hawkins he said “I get the same feeling from “Zombie” that I got from “I Put a Spell on You”. Now give me five-hundred dollars and I’ll record it. Mr. Hawkins vas kvite the businessman. Then Mr. Hawkins kept Mr. Hilly Michaels and me captive for several hours in a Greenwich Village duplex apartment on Hudson Street, until he extracted $5 from us (our last $5 by the vay) so that he could make his vay back through a tunnel to New Jersey.

But I could never pin Mr. Hawkins and $500 down at the same time so he never got to record “Zombie”, for he died, and perhaps is a zombie somevhere himself. So I recorded the song vit the able backing of some of The Radioactive Chickenheads, and it is on the compilation album “Mr. Snail’s Halloween Party”. There is more to the story but I shortened it. So here is the song and the lyrics. Perheps you could promote and post it on your vundaful vebsite so that it could soive as a cautionary tale for any of your readers who might by unfortunate happenstance encounter an ectual flesh-eating zombie.

Thank You Too Much!

Zombie Bazooka Patrol

Zombie Bazooka Patrol

Zombie Bazooka Patrol is a band hailing from Nashville.  They dress like zombies, their songs are about zombies, and their sound is something like folk-punk with a bit of rockabilly influence.  I’m actually quite digging the music!

Unlike the band in Hard Rock Zombies, Zombie Bazooka Patrol is going places!  They were recently flown out to Las Vegas to be on the upcoming television show The Search for the Next Great American Band (by the same people who produce the American Idol show).

Nellie McKay sings about zombies…

Nellie McKay, a musicain who is very hard to nail down to a style, has a new song from her upcoming album Obligatory Villagers, titled Zombie, that you can listen to here (not sure how long this link will work, so listen soon). The zombie moaning in the background is classic.

ZRC Show and Tell: Ken Foree signed Dawn of the Dead LP

untitled-4.jpg

Here’s a zombie goodie of mine. I met Ken Foree at a Motor City Comic Con I was exhibiting at a few years ago and got him to sign a then recent purchase of mine, a re-issue of the Goblin soundtrack to the original 1978 Dawn of the Dead on LP. I normally do not get things signed, but this was the world’s greatest zombie killer! I still listen to this record at least a few times a week. One of the best records ever.
