A closer look at …Of the Dead

Digging around on IMDb lead me to the News Desk and a better look at the …Of the Dead poster and what seems like a mock-up of the back of the …Of the Dead DVD case. You can get a larger full sized view of these posters at DreadCentral.com.

It seems that the IMDb News Desk has a lot of wild specualtion about the movie, including the idea that it’s a western, but also lists cast members with links to their IMDb bios. It’s definitely worth a look for anybody that just can’t wait until the next Romero movie comes out.

Day of the Dead (2008): Zombie Movie or Not?

Where do we draw the line on what is and what is not a zombie movie? We just can’t decide on our own, so every Monday we’ll post a new movie to be debated by, you, our readers and ask the question: Zombie Movie Or Not? Every Sunday we’ll post our findings and possibly strike that movie off our Zombie Movie List. The week should give you enough time to rent the movie if need be or you desire.

What every reader must keep in mind is that there are two basic types of zombie that every zombie movie based off of - the Voodoo Zombie and the Romero Zombie. The Voodoo Zombie, while not always raised by Voodoo necessarily, is basically a person, either undead or entranced, that is controlled by a person or entity for the purpose of completing tasks, often killing. Romero Zombies are basically mindless, flesh-eating undead whose bite will turn victims into zombies. Now, not all movies adhere to all of these rules, but if the basics are there, you got a zombie movie.

This weeks debate is over Day of the Dead (2008) Starring Mena Suvari and Nick Cannon.

IS: People get infected with a virus that brings them back from the dead to be mindless flesh eating ghouls. Textbook zombie move, duh.

IS NOT: The fact that a virus brings them back negates its zombiehood, let alone the fact that the “dead” return to be super ninja/spiderman “zombies”. NOT a zombie movie, just blasphemy

Now it’s up to you, reader. What do you think? Day of the Dead (2008): Zombie Movie Or Not?

Help a ZRC Reader Out!

One of our regular readers Steve Sutton emailed me earlier this week looking for some help ID’ing a zombie movie. Unfortunately, based on his description I’ve never seen it, so I thought we could open this up to our readers. If you think you know what movie Steve is talking about, please leave a comment!

Hello Erik,

I’ve either had a very warped dream or memories of a movie that I cannot remember the name of and no one else seems to have seen it before. Care to help?

Its a fairly recent picture and doesn’t have any major stars in it that I can think of. The basic jest of it is a girl tries to commit suicide via OD and alcohol…it doesn’t work. She wakes up to find her room-mates blood splattered empty room. And an “olderly” neighbor who is roaming an empty hallway, bouncing off walls as a directionless zombie. There are many flashback scenes to the previous night where the girl was at a party with her male roomie, a girlfriend, the man of her dreams and others. Through these flashbacks we learn that the girl’s girlfriend has betrayed her and stolen her “prince charming” and she is consoled by her roommate…who is secretly by shyly in love with her. The rest of the movie as I recall it is the chick has no clue why all the zombies are running around chasing her as she tries to make a run for her girlfriends apartment to confront her about the previous night. As she runs she repeatedly encounters the shy, loving roommate who is seeminly chasing her as well. but is in actuality kind of saving her from other zombies.

The storyline is pretty shallow (as I recall) but this is the basic jest of things. Does this sound like anything you’ve aware of? Or is this just one heck of a crazy dream I had?

I appreciate any help you can provide me on this. I’d like to see the movie again to refresh my memories of what it was all about.

Thanks,

Steve Sutton

Upcoming Zombie Film: George’s Intervention

George’s Intervention is an upcoming zombie movie currently filming in LA. In the world of the film, zombism is a disease much like alcoholism, and zombies are a normal part of society. “The zombieism in our film is accepted in society—there are tech support hotlines. It’s a given, it’s expected,” says director JT Seaton. Zombies can be cured with things like “tofu flesh”. Sounds like a very interesting premise for a film and we’ll definitely be looking forward to seeing this film upon its release.

Thanks to the Midnight Podcast for the link!

This weeks debate is over The Serpent and the Rainbow (1988) Directed by Wes Craven.

IS: This movie deals directly with the source of real haitian zombies.

IS NOT: There are no walking dead in this movie. No dead = not a zombies movie.

Norwegian Zombie Film Død snø (Dead Snow) Teaser Trailer

The teaser trailer for the upcoming Norwegian zombie film Død snø (Dead Snow) looks awesome. There has yet to be a truly great winter zombie film, which seems like a no-brainer, with all that it would add to the severity of the situation. Not sure what’s being said in this trailer since there are no subtitles (fixed- Thanks Pork-Eater!), but the few short glimpses of the Nazi zombies look great. It has a release date of January 9th, 2009 in Norway only.
