Pulse: Zombie Movie or Not?

Where do we draw the line on what is and what is not a zombie movie? We just can’t decide on our own, so every Monday we’ll post a new movie to be debated by, you, our readers and ask the question: Zombie Movie Or Not? Every Sunday we’ll post our findings and possibly strike that movie off our Zombie Movie List. The week should give you enough time to rent the movie if need be or you desire.

What every reader must keep in mind is that there are two basic types of zombie that every zombie movie based off of – the Voodoo Zombie and the Romero Zombie. The Voodoo Zombie, while not always raised by Voodoo necessarily, is basically a person, either undead or entranced, that is controlled by a person or entity for the purpose of completing tasks, often killing. Romero Zombies are basically mindless, flesh-eating undead whose bite will turn victims into zombies. Now, not all movies adhere to all of these rules, but if the basics are there, you got a zombie movie.

This weeks debate is over Pulse (2006) Starring Kristen Bell (Heroes, Veronica Mars) and co-written by Wes Craven.

IS: The “creatures” are a mindless, shambling mass wanting nothing more than to destroy and kill everybody. Sounds like zombies to me.

IS NOT: The “creatures” are nothing more than a computer virus (at best) that have taken human shape. Zombie…no way.

Now it’s up to you, reader. What do you think? Pulse: Zombie Movie Or Not?

I think they were more ghost like then zombies. So I would have to say no.

Though the creatures were dead, they didn’t have physical bodies so they were more like ghosts. No way resembling zombies.

Again, I’m going to vote on the ORIGINAL work, Kairo. Definitely NOT zombies, these are CLEARLY cybernetic ghosts. It shares some themes with zombie movies in terms of people feeling isolated, noticing that their friends and family are quickly disappearing, a changed world without many “humans” left in it, and a “plague” or “virus” which has global impact.

I vote no. They aren’t zombies, they’re computer viruses!

NO. I put this up because once again the ZMDb has it listed as a zombie film, but I call bullshit.

Well, zombies are created from a virus, which Pulse’s “zombies” were technically created from a virus. Pulse zombies also just want to kill. So I say they are ZOMBIES! Agh!
