Universal Soldier: Zombie Movie or Not?

Where do we draw the line on what is and what is not a zombie movie? We just can’t decide on our own, so every Monday we’ll post a new movie to be debated by, you, our readers and ask the question: Zombie Movie Or Not? Every Sunday we’ll post our findings and possibly strike that movie off our Zombie Movie List. The week should give you enough time to rent the movie if need be or you desire.

What every reader must keep in mind is that there are two basic types of zombie that every zombie movie based off of – the Voodoo Zombie and the Romero Zombie. The Voodoo Zombie, while not always raised by Voodoo necessarily, is basically a person, either undead or entranced, that is controlled by a person or entity for the purpose of completing tasks, often killing. Romero Zombies are basically mindless, flesh-eating undead whose bite will turn victims into zombies. Now, not all movies adhere to all of these rules, but if the basics are there, you got a zombie movie.

This weeks debate is over Universal Soldier (1992) Starring Jean-Claude Van Damme and Dolph Lundgren.

IS: An Army of the dead rises to attack the living, that’s textbook zombie movie there!

IS NOT: Having risen from the dead is no the only requirement for zombies, these are more automatons than zombies.

Now it’s up to you, reader. What do you think? Universal Soldier: Zombie Movie or Not?

No. Not a zombie movie. More of a frankenstein movie than zombie movie.

    NO way.

I think we’ll find this one most comparable to Robocop and its ZMON debate. NOT a zombie movie

Nope. Like Ed said, it’s more in the vein of Frankenstein.

Its not a zombie movie. Jean Claude couldn’t match the acting skills of a corpse.

    YES! TOTALLY! ZOMBIE MOVIE!

Just kidding…no. It’s more akin to a cyborg than zombies. I really don’t feel like putting in too much effort in my no. So, no.

    cyborgs are not zombies

“Jean Claude couldn’t match the acting skills of a corpse.”

… ROFL. Oh .. that made my day. Thank you! :)
Yes for that reason right there, and the fact that it is more of a cyborg/Frankenstein movie. This is NOT a zombie movie.

So when the much anticipated war between zombie and robots, what side do the cyborgs fall into? Frequently they are re-animated corpses brought back to life by means of robot technology. Cyborg families will be torn apart by civil war. Robo-brother against robo-brother. Prime directives will be questioned. The three law will fall by the wayside. Pools of blood and 10W30 will fill the streets. Just madness…
