The Return of “Mutant: Zombie Movie or Not?”

Risen from the grave, it’s The Return of Zombie Movie or Not? Mutant Edition!

The first time around the discussion was less than satisfactory for the editors of the ZRC, so we believed this excellent film warranted some more time to let our readers take a look at the film. Hopefully you’ve all done your homework and can enter the debate with the assurance of a clean outcome.

What every reader must keep in mind is that there are two basic types of zombie that every zombie movie based off of - the Voodoo Zombie and the Romero Zombie. The Voodoo Zombie, while not always raised by Voodoo necessarily, is basically a person, either undead or entranced, that is controlled by a person or entity for the purpose of completing tasks, often killing. Romero Zombies are basically mindless, flesh-eating undead whose bite will turn victims into zombies. Now, not all movies adhere to all of these rules, but if the basics are there, you got a zombie movie.

This weeks debate is over Mutant (1984) Directed by Jon “Bud” Cardos.

IS: They want to eat your flesh and their infection spreads just like zombies.

IS NOT: They’re just toxic waste induced mutants who can die any way a normal person can.

Now it’s up to you, reader. What do you think? Mutant: Zombie Movie Or Not?

Mutant all the way I enjoyed the movie for the most part but I kept waiting for the zombie aspect of it to come out and sadly it wasn’t till near the end. It did have some pretty good moments though.

    West-
Is that a vote for mutant as a zombie movie or not a zombie movie? Was that even a vote?

My response/ answer the first time around: Seriously…nobody has seen this? It’s a classic 80’s cult film full of toxic waste filled (literally) zombies! It’s cheesy, filled with over-acting and cheap make-up, but it’s, if I may, a hoot. And awesome. YES. Zombie Movie!

My response this time: FUCK YES…STILL A ZOMBIE MOVIE. Are we watching the same movie people? Just wondering…

This is totally a zombie movie! It’s strays from the convention that Romero laid down, but not that far off.
    Yes, zombie movie!!!

Alright. I just saw this one today. It’s a weird zombie movie, but it’s still a zombie movie, and since it’s overall a weird movie (that starts out as an exploitation road flick) it is exempt from some typical rules (like no running, jumping, falling out of windows zombies). The clincher for me was “Uncle Jack”, and then the abandoned town sequence directly follows. It takes a while to get there, but at 1hr13mins, you have a full on zombie stand-off. The people are effected by that odd yellow chemical, so it’s okay that they make weird growls and hold their hands up like arthritic vampires. Definite YES.
