Romero Starts Shooting Next Zombie Movie

From Variety comes news that George Romero is already hard at work on his next zombie sequel code-named “Something of the Dead”. You may recall back in July he suddenly dropped off the NOTLD reunion tour due to “work related issues” and it now appears that was due to this very film.

Plot involves inhabitants of an isolated island off the North American coast who find their relatives rising from the dead to eat their kin. The leaders of the island feud over whether or not to kill their reanimated relatives or preserve them in hopes of finding a cure.

Is this the rumored sequel to Diary of the Dead or another non-linear film in series? According to this interview with Schlock around the Clock, it may be the former:

Romero: I’m waiting to see if they’ll do this sequel to Diary. I’ll stick with this starting-over idea. It’ll be about three weeks in [past the outbreak] and it doesn’t start with the people in the mansion [at the end of Diary]. It starts with the blonde who drove away and the national guardsmen who robbed the people. So those are the only characters that return. What it’s about is tribalism. How the internet creates a Hatfields and McCoys situation. It’s on an island, where people have been lured by someone on the net as a safe haven, but really what these guys are trying to do is hold them up at the boat docks. I don’t know if it’s going to be made. The script is in, so we’ll see what happens.

It has actually been confirmed last week that this film is not a sequel to Diary of the Dead and is working under the title of ‘Island of the Dead.’

I just don’t know about all this info that’s floating around about Romero’s latest. It’s like the story has gotten its own life and has less and less to do with actual fact. Its near impossible to tell what’s rumor and what is based upon misunderstandings. I wouldn’t bet on it not being a sequel, or some sort, for example. This seems to be a misinterpretation that has circulated enough on the Web to become a matter of fact, as people simply refer to each other as the news source. Nowhere have I seen anyone connected to the actual production stating this in a clear fashion.

aww, Revenant Mag beat me to that tidbit from B-D!
Don’t worry peeps, just like Romero’s draft for ‘Resident Evil’ and ‘Land of the Dead’, the script for this thing will leak soon enough.

The news blurb from AICN has on-set photos and has a report from an extra on set… that doesn’t debunk the skepticism if it is indeed a sequel or not. However, considering the negativity that followed the initial Diary of the Dead, it would be an ENORMOUS public relations blunder to have leaked that the film is not a sequel and then have it in fact be a direct sequel.

I’m not sure it’s a matter of leaked information, but a simple misunderstanding that has multiplied so many times people take it for fact.

My own view is that it is indeed a sequel but doesn’t follow the main characters (the ones hold up at the mansion) and isn’t done in the cinema verité style. But I’m of course not any more a authority on this matter than anyone else spreading misinformation online…
