The Return of “Shock Waves: Zombie Movie Or Not?”
Back from the dead, as it were, The Return of Zombie Movie or Not? Shock Waves Edition!
The first time around the discussion was less than satisfactory for the editors of the ZRC (in fact it was barren of all things that make a discussion), so we believed it warranted some more time to let our readers take a look at the film. Hopefully you’ve all done your homework and can enter the debate with the assurance of a clean outcome.
What every reader must keep in mind is that there are two basic types of zombie that every zombie movie based off of – the Voodoo Zombie and the Romero Zombie. The Voodoo Zombie, while not always raised by Voodoo necessarily, is basically a person, either undead or entranced, that is controlled by a person or entity for the purpose of completing tasks, often killing. Romero Zombies are basically mindless, flesh-eating undead whose bite will turn victims into zombies. Now, not all movies adhere to all of these rules, but if the basics are there, you got a zombie movie.
This weeks debate is over Shock Waves (1977) Starring Peter Cushing, Brooke Adams, and John Carradine.
IS: They’re undead decaying Nazis that kill without reason or care, I call them ZOMBIES.
IS NOT: They’re undead, but they’re hardly zombies. They’re calculated killers, not mindless flesh eating ghouls. The whole light sensitivity brings to mind vampires, but they’re not that either. Not a zombie movie.
Now it’s up to you, reader. What do you think? Shock Waves: Zombie Movie Or Not?

I’ll go with Isn’t. They’re reanimated corpses but they don’t seem interested in eating anyone. They just kill whatever moves.
I think this is a no-brainer (no pun intended) – it’s a zombie movie. It’s survival horror and they seek to kill the living. They might even be zombies by the voodoo definition, even if the mind control isn’t working exactly…
It is a great zombie movie.
Zombie movie!!
I think this is not a zombie movie. They’re not flesh-eaters, they have more akin with vampires given their sensitivity to light and they’re not mindless in the least.
My vote is NO.
