Planet Terror: Zombie Movie Or Not?

Planet Terror: Zombie Movie Or Not?

Where do we draw the line on what is and what is not a zombie movie? We just can’t decide on our own, so every Monday we’ll post a new movie to be debated by, you, our readers and ask the question: Zombie Movie Or Not? Every Sunday we’ll post our findings and possibly strike that movie off our Zombie Movie List. The week should give you enough time to rent the movie if need be or you desire.

What every reader must keep in mind is that there are two basic types of zombie that every zombie movie based off of – the Voodoo Zombie and the Romero Zombie. The Voodoo Zombie, while not always raised by Voodoo necessarily, is basically a person, either undead or entranced, that is controlled by a person or entity for the purpose of completing tasks, often killing. Romero Zombies are basically mindless, flesh-eating undead whose bite will turn victims into zombies. Now, not all movies adhere to all of these rules, but if the basics are there, you got a zombie movie.

Planet Terror

This weeks debate is over Planet Terror (2007) Directed by Robert Rodriguez.

IS: There are people that turn into flesh eating zombies because of a toxic gas. What’s not zombie about that?

IS NOT:  This is more of movie about toxic mutants, not zombies. The gas didn’t turn the soldiers into zombies, they just mutated when they were without the gas. And they weren’t mindless living dead, just mutated and evil.

Now it’s up to you, reader. What do you think? Planet Terror: Zombie Movie Or Not?

I’d have to agree, planet terror is definately a zombie movie. Just like the resident evil games are still in the zombie genre

    Yes. Decent movie too.

Yes. The odd spread of zombie infection (gas is in Return of the Living Dead and some of Zombi series) is not unusual and is a reference to the genre of movies it celebrates. Italian giallo zombies were rarely conventional, and so their American/Other Western/Eastern copies of the era were similarly odd and well beyond the boundaries of Romero zombie.

If radio active waste turns people into zombies in Redneck zombies http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vMHA8cspQaA
then toxic gas sure can. But i’m not convinced they are the undead 100%.
But i’m leaning more to YES on this one.
