Dawn of the Dead 3-D and Possible Sequel???

According to Fangoria, Producer Richard Rubinstein is finishing up a 3-D version of the original Dawn of the Dead, which actually sounds like it could be pretty fun to watch. Unfortunatley, he’s also talking about making a sequel. Why? Who knows. My verdict…DOTD 3-D sounds like fun, DOTD 2 sounds like bullshit. Fangoria states: Rubinstein also has plans to create a direct sequel to the original DAWN (!). The exclamation point leads me to beleive that Fangoria is down with the idea of a sequel, once again proving why they are no longer vital to the horror genre. Read the full article here.

Why are you opposed to the idea of a new DoTD? I mean sure it will probably suck donkey balls but there’s always the rare chance that it will be a good flick. Just my two cents though. Love the site.
Seriously, I haven’t read Fangoria in like 10 years. It’s getting to the point that they will give good coverage to any horror film with no discretion as to whether its crap or should be avoided or shouldn’t have been made in the first place. I recently subscribed to Horrorhound after having several issues purchased for me by my girlfriend and I have yet to be disappointed. I’m not pitching the mag by a long shot nor am I saying there’s no chance that it might eventually be crap, but they did do a retrospective issue for the Monster Squad and they cover collectibles and horror genre creators of the 80’s through today like its going out of style. As of right now they are easily the best American horror genre coverage in magazine form.
I saw the promotion for the new “Digital 3D” version of the original DOTD last night….Sweeeeeeet. Hey, If a sequel is created to the original DOTD, I’d still go see it (I’m a zombie whore like that).
West- I’m just sick of sequels that have nothing at all to do with the original films, other than the title, and this idea just smells of that. But time will only tell…
Brian- Check out Rue Morgue magazine too. It has great coverage and doesn’t hide it’s feelings for crap flicks.

True sequels not dealing with the original films are vastly increasing in numbers almost daily it seems. It’s like “Hey that movie was descent let’s make a sequel to make a buck.” is the new motto for the horror movie genre.
I like to work off the idea though that sure people might make a 100 bad zombie movies a month but from those 100 movies someone somewhere will come up with the drive to make their own zombie movie; and maybe just maybe we’ll be lucky to get a great zombie movie. Necessity is the mother of Invention after all.
Just my two cents though.
I think many people, and by that I mean not only you good people reading this comment, are totally misrepresenting Fangoria. These are professionals reporting on upcoming movies – it’s not their job to be the judge of good taste or even quality. And why not? Well, because of the simple fact that these movies aren’t finished yet, so no one should be making any judgements about them, period. That is the reviewer’s job, and I mostly find Fangoria’s reviews among the very best. Professionals with some insight into the subject matter write these and I’ve seen them rip “popular” or “hyped” movies to threads, and even movies that their brethren, the journalists, have been covered extensively. So what if they let the studios market their stuff in their magazine/on their webpage? That only means access for us, the readers. It’s not like they are hyping movies without even seeing them, they just let the people involved talk about their work and showcase pictures from it. That is their job.
In conclusion I ask you this: Should Fangoria not have covered the Dawn of the Dead remake? Most people, present company included, were dead certain it wouldn’t have any redeeming qualities what so ever. In hindsight we know that the movie actually turned out pretty good – and anyone who can’t stand running zombies did got an early warning – from Fangoria. So I don’t buy the argument that Fangoria shouldn’t cover something as interesting (!) as a sequel to the best dawned zombie movie ever made. (Personally I’m pretty sure such a project automatically will crash and burn, but in the meantime I’m relying on Fangoria to supply the movie makers every opportunity to make an ass out of themselves! I also trust their review to be completely fair, regardless how the finished product actually turns out.)
