Bio-Zombie DVD Review

Bio-Zombie is about a pair of slackers, Woody Invincible and Crazy Bee, that “work” in a mall at a VCD shop. They spend a lot of time cruising the mall for girls and fast ways to ease their financial woes. After picking up their demanding boss’ car, they end up hitting a man who was carrying a chemical zombie-making agent disguised as a soft drink. After feeding the “soft drink” to the dying man, they take his corpse back to the mall. Guess what happens!
Bio-Zombie is usually labeled Hong Kong’s answer to Dawn Of The Dead, but it’s more like Mall Rats meets Shaun Of The Dead and just as good. It’s full of slapstick comedy via gory decapitations and severed limbs. Not so much horror as black comedy.
The zombies, being of a biological weapon variety, are a good gooey, gray and bloody mess. There aren’t a whole lot of special effects gimmicks, mostly well placed camera work and fast paced action. The special effects make-up is pretty simple, but effective for this comedy.
I’m usually one to watch foreign films with the English overdubs, but for this one, the comedy just didn’t translate well. The inflection and timing was all lost in translation, besides the subtitle lines made sense when the overdubs, that said completely different lines, didn’t make sense at all. I took a short look at the “Engrish” subtitles, which looked like a whole different comedy, one that I will watch once I buy this classic cult hit.
Bio-Zombie is a hilarious romp through a zombie outbreak that’ll tickle the funny bone of any zombie fan. I found this movie on 75% of the Top Ten Zombie lists that I saw on the internet and I think you’ll find it on yours if you haven’t seen it already. Check it out.
