Slither DVD Review

I’m sure that just having reviewed this for Zombie Reporting Center will spur a debate on whether or not this is a zombie movie. I can see both side of the debate. I can also review this movie.

I didn’t know anything about Slither before I watched it except that it was debatable whether or not it was a zombie movie. some of my best movie experiences were with movies that I had no preconceived notions of. If you are like me in this way and enjoy a horror movies, you should stop reading now and rent this movie, because I may just spoil it for you and this one is worth watching.

A meteor falls to earth and brings with it a parasitic being. Grant Grant (that’s his name, not a typo) stumbles upon the meteorite and a large slug shoots it’s parasitic host into Grants chest and he begins to slowly change over the course of a few days, starting with a rash on his chest. His wife’s suspicions are aroused when he pad-locks the basement door. Soon the sheriff arrives while Grant is away to ask about being the last person seen with a now missing woman. After finding what Grant has been hiding in the basement, Starla Grant calls the Sheriff back, but not before Grant catches her in the act. After a struggle that happens while Grants arms change into tentacles, the Sheriff and his deputies arrive and scare Grant off. Grant eludes the sheriff for a few days until they see a pattern and believe they have the drop on him. But, Grant is one step ahead of the Sheriff and leads him and his search team to the barn where the missing woman has become a giant insatiable meat eating womb, full of slugs that turn people into meat gathering zombies. It’s up to a small pack of survivors to stop an alien parasite from consuming everything living being on earth.

This movie is smart, funny, gory and entertaining. There are a lot of laughs by way of quippy dialog and witty banter. The movie is acted well by a group of top notch actors that you would no doubt recognize from a myriad of television and Hollywood movie performances.

The special effects make-up and CGI were both really good. The FX team did a great job of bringing the monstrous creations to life. The zombies make-up was light if there was any. They were pretty much just regular people with a blank look and a shamble to their walk and of course blood. Not that this minimalist approach took anything away from the story, the experience or the look of the film. They left it up to the actors to sell it, and it worked quite nicely.

All in all, watching Slither was a pleasing experience and I look forward to watching more movies by writer/director James Gunn who also did the screenplay for Dawn Of The Dead. I recommend you check this one out.

I was just thinking that Slither should be the next topic of the “Zombie Movie or Not?” series. I will refrain from commenting further on the subject until then…

    Great movie, though.

Why don’t give people a few weeks to rent it and watch it then come back to it for a “Zombie movie or not” special?
