Beyond Re-Animator DVD Review

13 years after Dr. Herbert West’s incarceration in Arkham Prison, after his experiments went wild at Miskatonic University, a young Doctor Howard Phillips has requested to do his residency in Arkham. As it turns out, he’s a fan of Dr. West’s work and wants to help him continue his research. Dr. Phillips returns to Dr. West a syringe of his infamous re-agent. This coupled with the work that Dr. West has secretly been performing throughout his sentence to stabilize the re-animated dead could finally complete his life’s work or could go drastically wrong.

Beyond Re-Animator is a welcome edition to the Re-Animator series, which is a rather campy and comedic horror enterprise. Jeffrey Combs reprises his role as Dr. West and is supported by a rather hit or miss cast of mostly Spanish actors and Jason Barry (as Dr Phillips), whose biggest gig that I’ve seen was playing Leonardo DiCaprio’s friend in Titanic. At one point, Barry seems to do a fine impression of George Clooney’s work in the South Park movie when he loses a patient on the table. Jeffrey Combs’ character and the gore carry the film quite nicely. The special effects were pretty cool as all manner of bloody stops were pulled to make this film sickly and funny.

The film has it’s drawbacks, as most direct to video horror movies do, but I think that fans of the Re-Animator series and gore hounds alike will enjoy Beyond Re-Animator. I liked it and I recommend picking it up.

I saw this series completely out of order. I saw this one first and to date, it’s still my favourite of the lot.
It reminded me of Army of Darkness styled humour with some pretty cool walking and crawling corpses.

And if you pick up the DVD, you get a dumb yet incredibly catchy music video as a bonus. Move your dead bones!

Actually, I saw the original first a long time ago, then I saw Beyond Re-Animator thinking it was the only sequel. I didn’t figure it out until the opening sequences tipped me off that it was the third movie.
