Zombie Night DVD Review

Zombie Night starts off as a small family is on the road back form a camping trip. They hear on the radio that nuclear war has broken out in the middle east and is being joined by other countries. Just as they start to get panicked by this news, their car dies (presumably by an EMP). The family abandons the car in search of shelter. While the father goes out to look for food, he runs into another man, Dave, who’s out looking for food who has tales of zombie attacks. They return to Dave’s family only to find that they’ve been attacked by zombies. On the run from zombies, a small group gathers that gets bigger by the day as they try to keep their grip on civilization in the midst of termoil throughout the group.

Zombie Night is a really low budget Canadian zombie movie. The acting is really bad. There are dramatic scene that are just painful to watch. The dialog is elementary and sometimes just awkward in the way it’s delivered. The pacing of the movie is pretty slow. The camera work and lighting is very basic and the set is just an old abandoned factory lot. From just looking at it, this movie has almost nothing going for it.

Oddly enough, I liked Zombie Night…for what it was. It focuses on the survival aspect of the zombie story, that’s always been my favorite part. The biggest fear they have is tensions in the group and the possibility of marauding gangs, not the zombies clambering at the door.

Some of the zombie make-up was pretty good, there seemed to be a wide range in quality as if more than one hand was sculpting the look. The gore and viscera were well represented even though the acting around them was lacking. The most memorable scene of the movie is a zombie getting his leg blown off by a shotgun blast amidst a cacophony of curse words.

If one had the patience, a real zombie enthusiast could enjoy this movie, but their just as likely to hate it. I can’t necessarily recommend this movie, but I did take a shining to it.
