Zombie movies at Sundance 2008

Movie Reel

MTV’s Movie Blog has the dish on the Diary of the Dead screening at Sundance. In short – everything you’d expect from a Romero film. The folks over at FirstShowing.net got to catch Otto; or Up With Dead People. Not very kind words for the latest German zombie movie. Not very kind at all…

That would be really nice to know and see, if I could get there.

What most people seem to have missed is that Bruce LaBruce does gay porn. This time there’s also a zombie theme, but it’s still gay porn. The whole gay porn thing doesn’t seem to go down so well with most horror movie fans.

And I do think it’s a Canadian picture, albeit shot on location in Germany. (Just so you guys don’t think German zombie movies are all about the gay porn thing.)

Regarding Sundance, they also showed a zombie short film that seemed almost as intriguing as Romero’s feature one. (I can’t seem to recall the actual titel, but it should be on the Sundance webpage, whatever the adress is.)

How do you know? Did you do a survey? I’m only guessing here, but I’m sure not all horror fans are giant homophobes. I’ve read a lot of reviews from Sundance about how utterly bad this film is, so I hope you are basing your scorn on that fact (you haven’t seen it, right?) and not because it is a “gay” film.

Ew! I wouldn’t want the immorality of homosexuality tainting my ability to enjoy heads being blown off with a shotgun, women being savagely raped by cannibals, flesh being ripped off of still living victims by walking corpses, screaming naked women choking on their own blood while being viciously beaten or guts spilling out after being hacked open by an edged-weapon wielding psychopath. Seeing gayness on any level would certainly turn me off from horror films.

Pardon my sarcastic diatribe. I’m willing to lay down money on a bet that says that there is no actual porn in Otto or Up With Dead People. I’d also lay down cash to say that what these people are referring to as “porn” is little more than gay love scenes or male nudity. I have no doubt that Zombie Lake has more akin with porn than this movie does. But, hey, I’m arguing from ignorance here in the case of the movie, but I’m arguing from experience in respect to America’s general negativity toward homosexuality. Death and murder is film is fine, but gay love is an atrocity! I defy you people to watch actual gay porn, then tell me what you think of Otto or Up With Dead People.

    Fuckin’ ridiculous.

I’m so glad Germany has the Pork-Eater looking out for their reputation as true zombie movie makers and not just peddlers of gay porn. Who’s gonna stick up for Canada?

    Please.

All I’m saying is that the Otto movie doesn’t seem to be a zombie movie at all, at least not as we would categorize it. From what I’m reading from actual reviews it does seem to be more of a gay porno than a zombie movie, but then again, you guys could be right and there’s actually some gore and flesh-eating present… Or not.

In short: It’s not any kind of horror movie, and all these these horror movie sites have covered it by mistake. Now they’re turned of by this fact. I’m not surprised.

Jef: If I’m not mistaken LaBruce has included gay porn in his previous work. So yes, I’ll take your bet. (And yes, I’ve seen actual gay porn and have lived to tell about it. And I’ll propably see Otto too.)

Here’s an interesting review of Otto:

Yeah, I saw this review. It was a little more to my liking in respects to the “gay-porn” subject. This made me think I might lose my bet.

But, I really just think that if the tables were turned and it was heterosexual sex happening on the screen on the same level, that people wouldn’t be so dismissive of it and call it porn. I think there’s a double standard and some severe homophobia going on in this country and possibly the world.

There’s a short interview up here with Bruce LaBruce.

Who ever thought that a zombie “making love” into another zombie’s flesh-wound would cause such a ruckus the world over…

    Say what now?!? WTF!
