Black Sheep DVD Review

Black Sheep

Okay, so start another debate. While not technically a zombie movie, Black Sheep has the spirit, if you will, of a zombie movie, thus it is included. Listen closely:

Black Sheep is about a New Zealand sheep herder’s son, Henry, returning home from the big city to sell his half of the farm to his older brother, Angus, after their father’s death. Meanwhile, two activist hippies are lurking around the farm because of the experiments and test on the sheep that the farm is rumored to be performing. After one of the hippies steals a canister set for disposal, he is chased by scientist at the farm which leads to his accidentally breaking the canister and letting loose a blood thirty sheep fetus, whose bite has adverse effects to the activist. Upon returning home, Henry is met by his old friend, Tucker. They decide to take a drive about the farm and discover that the sheep are acting strangely. They encounter one of the activists, named Experience, who is rather hostile and looking for her friend who she doesn’t know has been bitten. The three see smoke coming from a nearby home and encounter a bloody massacre and some rabid sheep. They begin to suspect something is awry and decide to work together to find out what it is. Meanwhile, the bitten activist starts to take a more sheepish shape as he stumbles about the farm in search of Experience and a way out. Henry, Tucker and Experience find Angus’ lab and even more questions come up about what’s truly going on with his genetic engineering.

The special effects are top notch. The effects team did a fantastic job in making people look like they were turning into rabid sheep. Along with the editor and director of photography, it makes this movie look real slick and natural despite it’s unnatural subject matter.

This movie has a dry humor to it, along with some slapstick and a bit of toilet humor for good measure. It had me laughing out loud and jumping from the suspense all the same. A good mix for this horror-comedy.

I think I’ve already said too much, but you should definitely check out this movie. It’s full of laughs, suspense, gore and action.

I watched this movie back in the summer and laughed my ass off! Too bad it didn’t get a theatrical release. Proof that low budget and independent films don’t have to be crap.

I liked this one too. Funny, but not over-the-top funy, and you really couldn’t tell it was low budget.

On a totally un-related note, I just watched ‘Evil’, a Greek flic. It’s from the Danny Boyle school of zombies, but surprisingly good character development and production values. The music was well done also…highly recommended.

    take care,

i’ve heard nothing but good stuff about this one. i don’t know, maybe it’s just me, but foreign zombie comedies (even if it is not exactly a zombie movie) always get me sucked in. i’ll have to pick this u.

Shite, so people are actually turning into… weresheep? (I thougth it was about re-animated sheep that didn’t infect humans…) Now it think I’ll have to review this one after all. (I decided early on to exclude it from my definition of zombie movies.)
