The Dead Hate The Living Review

A group of young film makers have broken into an abandoned hospital to shoot a zombie movie. They stumble onto a dead body and some sort of mad scientist lab. They decide to use the body and the lab in their movie and inadvertently open a portal to another realm where the dead live and revive the mad scientist who is bent on leading the realm of the dead to take over the realm of the living. The filmmakers must fight tooth and nail for their lives against the undead.
Despite the fake out in the beginning, the special effects make-up was pretty good. The zombies had pretty sweet facial prosthetics and the zombie from the cover, who’s quite prominent in the movie, has gruesome and creepy make-up too. They even give yo a hint of their zombification process when the director and his FX guy decide to escape the zombies by making themselves up to be zombies.
Matthew McGrory appears in the movie as one of the zombies. If you are up on your Guinness World Record trivia, then you’ll now that he was the man with the largest shoe size not caused by Elephantiasis - size 29 1/2. And he’s really fuckin’ tall, but they don’t seem to make much of that in the movie with the camera angles and all.
Now, the CGI effects left something to be desired. There’s a part where a zombie gets electrocuted amidst an elaborate light show that was so-so. But, the big stinker was the CGI flames on the zombies near the end, it looked an animated GIF that followed around the zombies that danced like hippies in Golden Gate Park. And when two of the film makers step into the realm of the dead, it looks like they stepped into Toonland of the dead.
All in all, this was a pretty good watch. If you’re a fan of zombie and/or horror films then you’ll catch tons of jokes throughout the film as the people making the film are obviously fans of those genres as well. Since it’s a movie about making a zombie movie, they pour on the movie references. If you’re in the mood for a zombie movie, you could do soooo much worse. I’m glad I rented it.

i always refer to this as my least favorite movie ever.
I really didn’t like it either. It’s a matter of taste, of course. But it had zombies, well sort of anyways, so I’m still glad i saw it.
What about it didn’t you like? Too fast zombies? ;-)
no, the cheap rob zombie look alike. and the props used as props in the fake movie used as props to be taken seriously in the real movie. back when i used to drink a lot whiskey (like 14 hours at a time) i decided that no amount of alcohol made this movie acceptable.
Yeah, the zombies were more like some sort of mutants from another dimension, than the living dead, I think. That sort of put me off. Interesting movie, nontheless.
