ZRC Movie Review: Night of the Living Dorks

Night of the Living Dorks (original title Die Nact der Lebenden Loser) has been out on DVD in the US for several months now and up until recently I hadn’t heard much about it. So I decided to rent it from Netflix and late one night popped it in the DVD player. Little did I know that instead of the quiet evening I had planned, I would be laughing out loud on the verge of tears.
Part coming-of-age teen comedy, part zombie movie, Night of the Living Dorks is all awesome. Think American Pie meets Hitchcock’s dark comedy classic The Trouble With Harry. With zombies.
The movies stars a group of high school friends, Phillip, Wurst, and Konrad along with their hot neighbor Rebecca. Rebecca’s fallen in with the local goth crowd and casts a re-animation spell in a graveyard which the teen trio manage to get mixed up in. Predictably, on the way home they get into an accident, die and wake up as zombies. The rest of movie has them searching for a cure, dealing with necrosis, and attempting the curb Konrad’s appetite for flesh.
Many of the funny parts of this movie are of the “caught in the apple pie” type moments that will have you laughing out loud. There are just too many of these moments to list, and most of them so shocking I’d blush even typing them out. The plot is fresh and has some twists that are just great. I loved just about everything about this movie.
The only thing I hated was the English overdubbing. It is absolutely wretched. Don’t even try to watch it unless you turn on German with English subtitles.
It’s a shame that Night of the Living Dorks is relatively unknown in the US, but just because you might not find it at your local video rental shop shouldn’t stop you from checking out this hilarious and original movie.
