Zombie Walk Detroit Coverage

Zombie Walk Detroit

We had a killer time last night out in Royal Oak for Zombie Walk Detroit! The turnout was absolutely enormous! Many thanks to the organizers Kelli and Rich who really had their work cutout for them trying to control such a large group. As usual, we were there taking pictures and video.

All our pictures are posted here. If you have some pictures of your own, please comment with a link or email them to us at submissions@zombiereportingcenter.com.

We also passed out about 100 flyers so if you’re one of those people visiting our website for the first time, please take the time to check things out and see what we’re all about. (A good place to start is our ZRC Exclusives page which lists a lot of the great zombie stuff you’ll only find here.) Also make sure to stick around for the next few days because we’re going to have another great contest soon!

UPDATE: Motor Family in Motown sent us some more pictures here.

Living Dead Glasgow Review

ldg-cover.jpg

Living Dead Glasgow #1 (Sex Gore Mutants Publications)
Zombie comics, just like films, have a tendency to reuse the same plot over and over. Zombies attack, people hide, zombies attack, people fight back, everyone dies/ goes to Canada or remote island. Don’t get me wrong, I love the classic zombies vs. survivors story, but putting a new twist on it can really elevate the story. Living Dead Glasgow, by brothers Alan and John Simpson, was a fun read, but seemed a little light on character development. One thing it wasn’t light on was the gore. Tons and tons of gore, including limb tearing, head crushing and the classic eye-pecking bird. The kind of gore I expect from a zombie comic. I just want less stereotypical characters added to this awesomely gore-filled zombie book.

To me, LDG is like a mix of Return of the Living Dead, 80’s underground/ alternative comix and Herschel Gordon Lewis. The two page back-up story Bad Dog, by Gary Northfield, has a funny ending that made me chuckle. There is also a four page Zombie Movie Classics list in the back of LDG, with great descriptions of classic and newer zombie films, complete with DVD cover art. This comic is worth checking out, and as much as it seems like I was picking on it a little bit, I am looking forward to the second issue.

Second Opinion (by co-editor Erik Zempel)

I agree with Nate - the plot and character development is a little on the light side, but the important thing to remember here is that this is issue number one, so of course it’s going to be just an introduction.  I felt like the Simpson brothers were just setting the stage for a much longer story.  The art is great and has that underground comix vibe to it.  There are a couple of good bits of humor here and there as well.  Overall it’s worth checking out and I sure hope this series continues.

More Web-Video Goodness: Dead Patrol

Dead Patrol

What wonderful times we live in. Computer technology and the Internet have enabled independent filmmakers to produce films and distribute them to the world easily, cheaply, and quickly. There are several online-only zombie serials going on now (for example the excellent War of the Dead and the upcoming Day of the Dying Living) and to add that list is Dead Patrol.

Dead Patrol starts in October but you can check out their trailer here. The series focuses on an army squad who is tasked with setting off nuclear devices in urban areas in order to clean out the undead. It’s a great idea and the quality looks outstanding for a web-based series. I’ll be looking forward to watching when the series starts.

Zombie Massacre

Uwe Boll

The director that everyone loves to hate, Uwe Boll, announced that he would be bringing yet another video game to the big screen - Zombie Massacre. This time, the video game hasn’t even been released yet, but the premise of the game sounds promising:

The goal of the game is to drive a fully-armed nuclear warhead (that’s stowed in the trunk of their vintage 1950s convertible) into the center of a city overflowing with zombies.

I’m sure we’re in for a big let-down given Boll’s history, especially given his total disregard for source material.

Interactive zombie movie making

Day of the Dying Living

What would it be like if movies were collectively made by thousands of individuals from around the world?  Day of the Dying Living is trying to find out in what may be the world’s only made-for-the-web zombie serial that anyone can star in.  Here’s how it works:  anyone can upload home videos of themselves acting like zombies, and those videos will be compiled and edited by Mindsplinters Films intow eight five-minute episodes. The first episode is tentatively scheduled for October 16th.
