Zombie Western!

Mixing cowboys and zombies is not the norm, but they have crossed paths a few times. The comic book Dead West by Rick Spears and Rob G. (from Gigantic Graphic Novels) is a great example. It’s synopsis reads:

During the westward expansion, a small Indian village is wiped out to make way for the settlement town of Lazarus. Years later, a single surviving Indian child returns as a grown man to enact his revenge. He places an ancient curse on the town in which the dead rise from their graves to prey on the living. Into this inferno wanders a bounty killer on the hunt for a fugitive. He’s no hero, he couldn’t care less about this dusty town or its rotting problems. He has men to kill, even if he has to raze the town to do it.

Here’s a sample page…

It’s being made into a feature film, with a 2008 release. We’ll keep you informed on it.

Dead in the West written in 1986 by Joe R. Lansdale is another good example. It has been re-released many times, from a number of publishers, so it shouldn’t be to hard to come across.

It was also adapted as a two issue comic series from Dark Horse Comics in the early 90’s.

Check these out if you get a chance.

Return of the Zombie Birds

Zombie Chicken

Last month we blogged about zombie chickens roaming compost piles, and today comes a story about wild undead birds that managed to close off ten blocks of downtown Austin. Authorities are not sure what caused it, but they think it may have had something to do with a release of gas similar to what happened this week in NYC.

Here we go again…

Yep, another re-make. This makes three re-makes out of the four Romero zombie films. At this rate, watch for the Land of the Dead re-make by 2010.

Romero Zombie Comics

Avatar Press, who normally publishes very good crime comics and very crappy bad girl comics, is now the official home for George A. Romero “Dead” comic book series. They have released a few titles over the last year and are pushing ahead with a variety of new series, which include George A. Romero’s Night of the Living Dead, Plague of the Living Dead and Escape of the Living Dead and the sequel Escape of the Living Dead: Airborne.

Also, check out back issue bins for other series by the now defunct FantaCo Enterprises including Night of the Living Dead and Night of the Living Dead: London. Also, Dead Dog Comics released Night of the Living Dead: Barbara’s Zombie Chronicles and Day of the Dead: The Rising of Bub.

Grindhouse Double Feature

Planet Terror

Finally, something new and different to see at the movies this spring. Grindhouse will be released to theaters April 6th, 2007, but it’s not a movie. It’s actually a double-feature composed of a Robert Rodriguez (you know him from Sin City) zombie film “Planet Terror” and a Quentin Tarantino film entitled “Death Proof“. Best yet, sandwiched between the two films like a nice slice of awesome salami will be a selection of fake movie trailers. One is called “Werewolf Women of the SS” and is directed by Rob Zombie.

The concept alone sounds great and I greatly anticipate seeing this in theaters.
